This course introduces the learner to the concepts and theories of bio-psychosocial dynamics of Psychiatric Childhood Disorders. It also provides the student with knowledge of the nursing care necessary to restore the child/adolescent and family to optimum functioning along the health illness continuum.

This course introduces the learner to the concepts and theories and the bio-psychosocial dynamics of cognitive disorders and focuses on the nursing management of these disorders, using the Nursing Process as a framework for the development of appropriate nursing diagnoses.  The student utilizes the Nursing Process in order to develop the necessary related nursing skills.  The course also provides the student with knowledge of the nursing care necessary to assist the client and family with the necessary coping skills to maintain optimum functioning along the health illness continuum.  The main areas of content covered by the course are psycho-social aspects of aging, acute cognitive disorders, primary and secondary dementias and the nursing management required for the areas.

This course examines the psychopathological process of the anxiety, somatoform, dissociative, personality, mood, schizophrenic and cognitive impairment disorders.  It will prepare students to apply the modalities of treatment for these disorders while maintaining an emphatic but professional relationship with clients.

This course introduces the learner to the concepts, theories and the biopsycho-social dynamics of substance abuse.  It provides fundamental knowledge about substance abuse and focuses on the role of the nurse in assessment, care planning, intervention and evaluation.
