COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course focuses on the issues associated with the emergence and re-emergence of infectious
diseases and the resulting burden on public health and public health resources. Students study
the processes involved in disease surveillance and mapping and the strategies which, given the
Sustainable Development Goals, may be utilized to reduce the incidence of these diseases.
This course is designed to:
1. Enhance student’s knowledge of the diseases that have emerged in the twenty-first century
and their impact on public health.
2. Increase student’s awareness of the biological, socioeconomic and other factors that
influence the transmission of infectious diseases.
3. Increase student’s appreciation of the importance of surveillance and disease mapping in a
given population.
4. Enhance student’s awareness of the strategies that may be utilized to reduce the incidence
and transmission of infectious diseases as projected in the Sustainable Development Goals.
