This course covers the history of Caribbean music, jazz music and popular music of the 20th century.  Styles, composers, performers, instrumentation and key pieces are examined.  Caribbean music is covered in a seven-week module that includes surveys on reggae, calypso, the steel pan, tuk, spouge, and folk.  A descriptive research paper on a local performer or composer is done by each student.  Both jazz and pop music histories are taught in four-week modules.
