This course is a survey of styles, key composers and important works in Western European music from the 4th to 20th century.  The socio-cultural influences on music and its function in the society will also be discussed.  The components of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form, instrumentation and performance practice are examined.  These are used as a basis for looking at music divided into the periods of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century.
