This course focuses on enhancing students’ understanding of the complex nature of Caribbean societies, the impact of development from a political viewpoint and how the policies utilised will change and structure development. Further emphasis will be placed on the historical and current theorizing and concepts that have helped to shape the region and the world at large.
Carefully selected units are designed to give a historic background of the Caribbean Political Movement. The Constitutional structure of the various territories and the two party system of government patterned after the Westminster Model are stressed. This course covers the interface of economy and politics in domestic context. It examines both the liberal and the Marxist traditions in the study of the development of political structures and economies in the Caribbean.
This course offers students an historical overview of the influences that shape Caribbean theatre with special reference to conquest, colonization and independence with an analysis of the classical, traditional, ritual, social realism/yard, calypso and carnival theatre forms and styles, as well as the modern Caribbean playwrights in the diaspora. Students will examine the socio-political context and examine the technical aspects and critically interpret a major work.
