This introductory course in mechanics provides students with the opportunity to improve their understanding of Newtonian mechanics whilst developing their problem-solving skills. Topics covered include: SI units and prefixes, scientific notation for numbers, measurement techniques, precision and accuracy, errors and uncertainty, scalars and vectors, energy, power and efficiency, potential and kinetic energy, Archimedes’ principle, kinematics, projectiles, Newton’s laws, circular motion, dynamics, momentum and collisions.

The unit elucidates the relationship between the inheritance of characteristics and the origin and diversity of living organisms. Furthermore, it emphasises how these characteristics are perpetuated from generation to generation. It expounds on the theory of evolution by natural section thus encouraging the student to make intellectual inferences based on biological patterns and trends.
This is primarily a computer-based course designed to provide students with the basic skills in creating, and manipulating databases of health determinants using geographic information system (GIS).
