This course covers some general aspects of construction which provide basic information that will be necessary for persons dealing with maintenance work. These should be useful whenever it becomes necessary to replace or restore elements within an existing structure during the normal process of maintenance.

Masonry will include many of the skills that are necessary for the trowel trades, i.e. brickwork, block work, stonework and concrete, as well as plastering and rendering. It will also include a range of masonry materials and applications including stone, concrete, block, brick, render (stucco) and plaster.

This course surveys the general properties of materials and gives a knowledge of concretes and steel which are the most common materials used in building. This is a highly theoretical course with laboratory testing.
