COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This introductory course is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills to enable them to work in a modern library. It explores how technology is reshaping the landscape of library services, operation and user experiences. The course covers a range of topics, including library management systems, digital libraries, electronic resources, virtual reference systems, library equipment and emerging technologies. Students will gain hands-on experience in using modern library tools and platforms.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Explain the role of technologies in modern libraries and the impact on library services and users.
2. Assess emerging technologies and their potential application in a library setting.
3. Navigate library management systems effectively to support library operations.
4. Digitise materials ensuring compliance with international standards.
5. Establish secure access controls for digital resources using authentication and authorisation protocols.
6. Apply knowledge of the components, processes and relationships that support the discovery and access of items in electronic databases.
