This first course in the Design series explores concepts of environments (cultural, physical, social), design and space in order to provide students with an introduction to the study of Architecture. Students begin to ‘experience architecture’ through the investigation of sites, visual analysis and discussion of products of design.
This course focuses on design as a means of solving architectural problems at the level of a single building element or at the level of a selected building site. Students will learn to assess the influence of climate, topography and environmental issues on architectural design. Topics are dealt with from a global perspective, with Caribbean contexts given an in-depth treatment.
The Comprehensive Design Project will seek to take students through the challenge of developing a design which will integrate all the elements previously explored in the design courses. It will also draw on others courses (Construction, Structures and Environment Science) taught in the Architecture Programme.
The final course in the Design series continues the exploration of key elements of architectural design. Bubble diagrams, space analysis and planning, elevations and massing are explored in order to complete the integrated design process. The course culminates with a Comprehensive Design Project which seeks to integrate elements previously explored in architecture specific courses. This Comprehensive Design Project integrates other architecture components of the programme viz.: Visual Communications, Conceptual Structures, Construction Technology and Materials, and Environmental Science. These project components are assessed in their respective courses.
This course introduces students to the drafting of building elements. Topics covered are the building process, foundations and walls. Students will produce sketches and drawings to gain an appreciation of architectural construction documents.
This course continues the focus on the drafting of building elements. Topics covered are stairs, windows and doors, roofs and finishing works.
