This course builds on the philosophy and concepts of Nursing, and the ethical and legal aspects of nursing as a profession. It provides information on positive attributes to assist the learner in profession growth and development.
The course is intended to provide with the information pertaining to sensitive, ethical, moral, legal and controversial issues, which impact the nurses’ practice. It is designed to help the student develop critical thinking skills and to provide appropriate guidelines for ethical decision-making.

This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse as an important member of the interdisciplinary team, while establishing skills in the Nurse-Client relationship. It highlights nursing as a profession and guides the student through the multifaceted nature of nursing. Areas of focus include the History, Philosophy, Legal and Ethical Aspects of Nursing and Communication. Education, health related agencies and professional organizations are also discussed. The course seeks to develop within the student a heightened awareness of the public’s right to quality nursing care and to assist the student to acquire the skills necessary for professional attitudes and behaviour in nursing. It is also intended to help the student to understand how social, political and scientific factors have influenced the development of nursing as a profession.
