This introductory language course provides students with the language skills and the social and cultural awareness needed to develop oral proficiency at the beginner's level. The course will enable students to use Spanish to function in social and business contexts common to the specialized areas of study for which the foreign language program is designed. The course focuses primarily on the oral-aural registers but also provides reading comprehension and writing exposure.

This course facilitates the further development of aural and reading comprehension skills through a variety of exercises.
It is designed to enable students to:
• Continue to develop linguistic skills via brief written assignments and contextual grammatical exercises.
• Develop a wide vocabulary in Spanish.
• Develop skills needed to gather and organize information about culture.
• Think analytically and critically about many of the widely held beliefs related to cultural identity.
• Identify differences between Barbadian and Spanish language community behaviour in everyday circumstances with the potential to cause misunderstanding, embarrassment or offence.
