This course is designed to provide the student with the fundamental knowledge of nutrients and their importance to man as a bio-psychosocial being. It focuses on the nutritional status and requirements of the healthy individual throughout the life cycle. It examines the role of the nurse and nutritional agencies in community health care. It is also intended to introduce the student to the essentials of nutritional therapy, and to urge them to espouse and promote proper eating for the prevention of illness through sound nutrition practices.
This course is designed to provide a general understanding of the object-oriented paradigm using an object oriented programming language. Topics include objects, classes, inheritance, overloading and polymorphism. Object oriented program design will also be addressed.
This course guides the student through the changes experienced by a woman as she progresses through pregnancy. It provides knowledge and understanding required for management of the mother and child in the antenatal period, pregnancy, delivery and in post-partum. The course also examines relevant statistics and clarifies the family planning function and patient rights. Practice of the skills related to the theory treated in this course will be provided in the associated clinical attachments.
This course describes the application of environmental, biological and public health principles to; the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, control, reduction and prevention of occupation-related adverse health effects such as chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic hazards; administrative and engineering control strategies for occupational hazards and control strategies for occupational problems including primary, secondary and tertiary interventions.
It will also focus on the epidemiology of diseases associated with industrial and other occupational exposures and will provide a basic knowledge of the principles and methods of occupational epidemiology, with emphasis on pragmatic issues in the collection, compilation and analysis of data from epidemiologic studies in the workplace.
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to effectively organize and operate a safety program for any size or type of industry. This intensive forty-five hour course is designed primarily for those interested in learning about safety management responsibilities, although it is also an excellent review and update for an experienced safety professional.
The main objective of this occupational health and safety course is to introduce students to the potential hazards and possible potential occupational diseases which they may encounter on the job. It also informs them about the importance of personal protection, the work station and tool design. The students are introduced to International and National agencies in charge of the health and safety of workers. They are also taught the importance of having check lists, carrying out inspections and writing accident reports. The topics include: History Of Occupational Health & Safety, Barbados and Occupational Health & Safety, Hazards At Work, Noise and Vibration, Personal Protection, and Fire & Fire Prevention.

This course is compulsory for all students of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic’s Barbados Youth Advance Core program and is designed to sensitise, encourage and motivate students to learn and adopt the fundamental skills and behaviours necessary for interacting and performing effectively, both personally and professionally. Emphasis is placed on developing the knowledge and general skills necessary for any common work environment.
Students will be exposed to relevant industry standards in their field of study, cover causation factors of accidents, basic elements of safety management and risk management.
Students who complete this course will also have the option to pursue the Technical and Vocational (TVET) Council’s National Vocational Level 2 qualification, in Occupational Safety and Health.

Participants will develop competencies in health and safety monitoring, accident investigation, job function evaluation and improved advocacy of health and safety in the workplace.
